Woodwork by Thirsk University Student Matthew Hendry
20/09/2018
Matthew has studied A Level Art at Thirsk and is now attending Leeds University of Art to begin a foundation year. Initially focusing on portraiture and realism at Thirsk, Matthew developed a passion for woodwork from his grandad who was a carpenter near York. Matthew is now pursuing woodturning; designing tactile bowls, lamps and salt and paper grinders. Each piece is uniquely handmade using a variety of British and foreign woods. He enjoys woodturning as no two pieces of wood can be the same; the grain gives each piece its own character. When starting a design, he is always thinking of new ways he can enhance the wood for an example, pressing leaves and preserving them in resin for the base. Following this Matthew is now deeply interested in furniture design and is currently underway designing tables and woodcarvings. Click here to see his woodwork currently at The Connection Gallery
